What is Structural Heart Disease?

Structural Heart Disease refers to any problem involving the heart’s shape, valves, walls, or muscles. These conditions directly affect the heart’s ability to do its job. You may have been born with a structural heart disease condition or have developed one due to age, illness, or infection.

Types of Structural Heart Problems

• Heart Valve Disease: The heart has four valves that can be either narrowed (stenosis) or fail to close (regurgitation).
  • Aortic Stenosis: Aortic stenosis is a progressive condition that occurs when your aortic valve leaflets become stiff, causing the valve to function improperly.
  • Mitral or Tricuspid Valve Regurgitation (MR or TR): MR or TR are conditions where the mitral and/or tricuspid valves fail to close completely, causing blood to leak backward in the wrong direction.
• Heart Hole Closure: Holes in the heart can cause the heart to change its shape and fail or increase the risk of stroke.
• Atrial Fibrillation: Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) is a common heart rhythm disorder that increases the risk of stroke and requires blood thinners. If you are one of the many people who cannot take blood thinners, there are options to reduce your risk of stroke.
• Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM): HCM is a condition where the heart muscle thickens abnormally (hypertrophy), affecting the heart’s function.
